A Free Webinar Opens the Door to the Philippine Startup Ecosystem

Aspiring entrepreneurs, innovators, researchers, students, and startup teams are invited to join Startup 101: Understanding Startups and the Philippine Startup Ecosystem, a free webinar organized by the University of the Philippines Los Baños Technology Transfer and Business Development Office as part of its 19th Founding Anniversary celebration.

The webinar will be held on July 16, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM via Zoom. It aims to introduce participants to the fundamentals of startups, innovation, and the broader ecosystem that supports entrepreneurship in the Philippines.

Registration is open through  the official registration page.

Every Startup Journey Begins With Understanding the Ecosystem

Building a successful startup is about more than having a promising idea. Founders must understand how startups differ from traditional businesses, where to find support, how innovation ecosystems operate, and what resources are available to help ventures grow.

Startup 101 is designed to provide this foundation by helping participants better understand the Philippine startup landscape while connecting them to the institutions and opportunities that support innovation-driven entrepreneurship.

Whether someone is validating their first idea or exploring entrepreneurship as a career path, understanding how the ecosystem works can significantly shorten the learning curve.

Universities Continue to Play a Bigger Role in Startup Development

Across the Philippines, universities are increasingly expanding their role beyond education and research. Through technology transfer offices and innovation programs, they are helping transform research outputs into commercial opportunities while supporting the next generation of founders.

The UPLB Technology Transfer and Business Development Office has been one of the institutions contributing to this effort by promoting technology commercialization, intellectual property management, and entrepreneurship within and beyond the university community.

Programs such as Startup 101 demonstrate how higher education institutions are becoming important entry points into the country’s growing innovation ecosystem.

Why This Matters for Northern Luzon’s Founders

Although the webinar is organized by UPLB, its lessons are valuable for aspiring founders across Northern Luzon.

Many early-stage entrepreneurs focus on developing products before understanding how startup ecosystems operate. Learning about funding pathways, incubation programs, technology commercialization, and founder support networks early can help entrepreneurs make better decisions as they build their ventures.

For founders in Northern Luzon, participating in learning opportunities outside the region also creates valuable connections with national innovation institutions and expands access to knowledge that can strengthen local startup communities.

The Philippine startup ecosystem continues to grow through collaboration among universities, government agencies, technology business incubators, and entrepreneurs. Events like Startup 101 provide an accessible starting point for anyone looking to become part of that ecosystem.

Market Context

The Philippine startup ecosystem has expanded significantly following the enactment of the Innovative Startup Act, which strengthened support for technology startups through government programs, startup enablers, and innovation funding. Universities have become key contributors to this ecosystem by helping researchers commercialize technologies, supporting startup formation, and building stronger links between research and industry. Introductory programs like Startup 101 help lower the barriers for aspiring founders by making the ecosystem more accessible and easier to navigate.
